UAE notice period rules explained

Ending a job in the UAE, whether you resign or your employer ends the contract, starts with notice. Article 43 of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 sets the rules.

How long

The notice period is whatever your contract says, but it must be at least 30 days and no more than 90 days. Both sides can agree to shorten it.

During the notice period

The contract continues as normal. You keep working and receive your full pay and benefits.

If notice is cut short

The side that does not honour the notice must pay the other the wage for the unserved days. If your employer asks you to leave straight away, they pay you. If you leave early without agreement, you may owe your employer, usually taken from your final settlement.

Worked example

Notice given 1 October 2026, 30 days: notice ends 31 October. Asked to leave on 21 October: 10 unserved days. On AED 9,000 total salary, that is 10 × AED 300 = AED 3,000.

Probation

Probation has its own rules. For example, an employer ending a contract during probation must give 14 days' notice. Check Article 9 or ask MOHRE for your case.
