How to count working days between two dates

Deadlines, notice periods and project plans often depend on working days, not calendar days.

The method

  1. Count every day from the start date to the end date, including both.
  2. Take off the weekend days.
  3. Take off any public holidays that fall on working days.

Example

1 to 31 October 2026 is 31 days. October 1 is a Thursday. With a Saturday and Sunday weekend there are 9 weekend days, so 22 working days. With a Friday and Saturday weekend there are 10, so 21.

Weekends differ

The UAE, the UK, the US and India mostly use Saturday and Sunday. Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait use Friday and Saturday. Many private businesses in Pakistan and elsewhere work six days. Use the weekend your workplace follows.
